Brimming with Mediterranean bliss, the Maltese Islands are quickly emerging as one of Europe’s most popular cruise destinations. Not only do they enjoy eternally sparkling seas, but the laid back luxury of the port settlements, rich historic architecture and unique natural landscapes make the islands nothing short of stunning.
Holidaymakers beeline for Mediterranean bliss
Last year, the islands hosted no less than 670,000 passengers, a figure that marks a 30% increase on 2014’s passenger statistics. As well as a growing appreciation for the allure of the Maltese Islands, the cruise boom has also been fuelled by new infrastructure investments, as well as construction on a dedicated terminal.
Thanks to its central Mediterranean location, Malta is easily accessible to all. While Italian and Spanish tourists were responsible for the largest passenger growth, Brits also made up a large portion of 2015’s visitors. The majestic beauty of the iconic the Grand Harbour also helps to give Malta one up on its other island counterparts.
Sweeping the stakes as an industry favourite
Not simply a favourite with passengers, Malta has received industrywide recognition for its growing popularity. London’s inaugural Wave Awards ceremony named it as one of three worldwide finalists for the Favourite Destination category, as voted for by over 27,000 cruise addicts. The 9th edition of the Cruise Excellence Awards honoured Valletta Cruise Port as the Best Mediterranean Port & Destination, further adding to its industry credentials.
A commitment to growth
Peter Vella, UK Director for the Malta Tourism Authority is adamant that Malta is one of the fastest growing holiday destinations on the planet, with cruise tourism opening up new opportunities for both travellers and the local Maltese economy. “The cruise industry is one of the fastest growing segments of the travel industry,” he said, “and our aim is to successfully evolve Malta from a one port call destination to a home porting one. With the increasing popularity of cruise holidays, we continue to improve our product offering, the recognition from these prestigious awards encourage Malta to further develop its cruising industry and to expand as much as possible.”
