Avalon Illumination sails for Avalon Waterways on itineraries across the Danube and Main rivers, calling at some of central Europe's most celebrated cities and towns. The sailings currently on sale depart from late September 2026 and run to as long as 21 nights, with most voyages setting out from Budapest, Nuremberg, Vilshofen, Amsterdam or Vienna — all of which require a flight from the UK, which we can arrange as part of a single joined-up package.
Avalon Illumination offers two cabin grades bookable through Cruise1st, ranging from a river-view outside cabin to the flagship Royal Suite.
Full layouts, bed configurations and deck-by-deck positions are shown on the Avalon Illumination cabins and deck plans page.
The great majority of sailings on Avalon Illumination follow the Danube River, one of Europe's grandest waterways, threading through Hungary, Austria, Germany and beyond. A smaller number of itineraries take in the Main, connecting the Danube corridor to central Germany. Departures leave from Budapest most frequently, with additional embarkation points in Nuremberg, Vilshofen, Amsterdam and Vienna — giving you flexibility in how you join the ship and how long you travel.
Itineraries of up to 21 nights mean you can take a short taster of one river or commit to a longer voyage that weaves several destinations together. Because every departure involves flying to the embarkation port, we treat the cruise as the centrepiece of a longer trip and build everything around it.
As one of the UK's leading cruise specialists, Cruise1st brings specialist knowledge of Avalon Waterways — not the generalist advice of a high-street travel agent. Every sailing on Avalon Illumination departs from Hungary, Germany, the Netherlands or Austria, which means flying from the UK is part of the plan for every itinerary on sale. That is where Cruise1st Packages come in: we pull the flights, the hotel either side and the transfers into one holiday alongside the cruise, so there is a single booking to manage and one team to call if anything changes.
Our cruise experts are available on the phone before you book — to talk through cabin grades, help you weigh up itinerary lengths and make sure the fare inclusions suit your trip. There is no pressure to decide online.
If space and a sense of occasion matter to you, the Royal Suite S at 27.9 m² is the standout choice — two separate living areas and balcony access make it feel more like a boutique hotel room than a ship cabin. If you want a comfortable base with a genuine river view and a more modest price, the Deluxe Outside Cabin D at 16.0 m² delivers that: two windows, natural light and scenery. Our advisers can talk you through which suits your travel style and budget before you commit.
Every sailing currently available on Avalon Illumination departs from a European port — Budapest, Nuremberg, Vilshofen, Amsterdam or Vienna — so yes, a flight from the UK is needed for every voyage. Through Cruise1st Packages we can book the flights, any hotel stays at either end and transfers to and from the ship, all as one holiday. That means one payment, one confirmation and one point of contact for the whole trip.
The sailings currently on sale range up to 21 nights, covering the Danube and Main rivers. Shorter voyages are available for those with limited time, while longer itineraries are suited to travellers who want to follow the Danube at a genuinely unhurried pace, taking in multiple countries and ports of call.
Danube itineraries on Avalon Illumination typically use Budapest, Vienna and Vilshofen as key waypoints, covering stretches of the river that pass through Hungary, Austria and Germany. For a full picture of what is available along this waterway, the Danube River Cruises page lists all current sailings by date and duration.
