Avalon Visionary is a river cruise ship operated by Avalon Waterways, sailing itineraries of up to 15 nights across three of Europe's most celebrated waterways: the Danube, the Rhine and the Moselle. Her itineraries depart from a spread of European cities — Budapest, Nuremberg, Vilshofen, Vienna, Remich and Amsterdam among them — making her a versatile choice for guests joining at different points along the rivers.
Avalon Visionary offers two confirmed cabin grades, each sleeping two guests, designed to suit different priorities of space and outlook.
For a full breakdown of layouts and where each grade sits on the ship, see the Avalon Visionary cabins and deck plans page.
The bulk of sailings on Avalon Visionary follow the Danube River, Europe's second-longest river, passing through Hungary, Austria and Germany between Budapest and Nuremberg or Vilshofen. The Danube itineraries account for the majority of departures on sale, with Budapest and Nuremberg the most common starting points.
A smaller number of sailings head to the Rhine, one of Europe's most storied waterways, running through Germany and the Netherlands and connecting cities such as Amsterdam with the vineyards and medieval towns further south. One sailing takes in the Moselle, a quieter tributary known for its steep-sided wine valleys, departing from Remich in Luxembourg.
Guests joining Rhine sailings from Amsterdam can find departures listed on the Amsterdam cruises page.
As one of the UK's leading cruise specialists, Cruise1st brings genuine knowledge of Avalon Waterways' river product — not the generalist view of a high-street travel agent. Our team offers expert advice from real cruise specialists available on the phone before you commit to anything, helping you weigh up cabin grades, itinerary length and the inclusions that actually matter to your trip.
Because every sailing on Avalon Visionary departs from continental Europe — Germany, Hungary, Austria or Luxembourg — the cruise is the middle of a longer trip. Cruise1st Packages bring the flights, hotel nights either side and transfers together into one holiday, on one booking, so there is no gap between what the ship covers and what you've arranged.
The Danube is the most popular starting point, and Avalon Visionary has more sailings there than on any other waterway. The cities are large and well-connected — Budapest and Vienna are two of Central Europe's most visited capitals — so first-time river cruisers tend to find the Danube the most straightforward introduction. The Rhine is a strong second choice for guests who prefer shorter transfers from UK airports, with Amsterdam as a natural gateway.
Every departure on Avalon Visionary leaves from a European port, so UK guests will need flights. Cruise1st handles this as part of a single package: flights, hotel nights at either end, transfers and the cruise itself, all on one booking. There is no need to price and coordinate each element independently.
Current sailings range up to 15 nights. Shorter options are available within that range depending on the river and the departure point — Budapest, Nuremberg, Vilshofen and Vienna all appear as starting harbours across the programme, giving a reasonable spread of itinerary lengths to choose from.
If space and in-room comfort are the priority, the Royal Suite S gives you 27.9 m², a balcony, and two of everything — wardrobes and televisions — in a configuration designed for two guests who want room to spread out. If you're spending most of your time ashore and want a well-organised base to return to, the Deluxe Outside Cabin D at 16.0 m² is a practical choice with notably generous storage. Our cruise experts can talk through both options before you book.
