Chasing the aurora borealis by sea is one of the most compelling reasons to cruise to Norway — and at Cruise1st, you can do it without spending a fortune. The vast majority of departures leave from Southampton, London or Newcastle, so most UK travellers can reach the ship by road or rail with no flight needed. As one of the UK's leading cruise specialists, our team offers expert advice on picking the right cabin grade and fare inclusions for your budget, and we can put together a complete Cruise1st Package — cruise, hotels, transfers and flights in one booking — for the handful of sailings that begin abroad.

A northern lights cruise takes you into the Arctic skies of Norway — one of the world’s most reliable places to see the aurora borealis — aboard a ship that handles the sailing while you focus on the horizon. Sailings run from 5 to 7 nights, with most lasting 7 nights, and prices start from £477 pp*. That makes the aurora more accessible than many travellers assume.
Almost all of the sailings depart from UK ports, which means no flight is needed for the vast majority of travellers. The main embarkation ports are:
For those starting from a UK port, you can drive or take the train to the terminal and be at sea the same day — no airport queues, no checked luggage restrictions.
P&O Cruises has the largest number of sailings, operating from Southampton aboard some of their best-known ships. Ambassador Cruise Line offers a smaller, more intimate alternative, also from UK ports. MSC Cruises and Fred Olsen Cruise Lines round out the choice, giving you a range of styles and ship sizes to consider. You can browse all cruises from the UK or explore the full range of cruises available through Cruise1st if you want to compare across destinations and budgets.
The ships on these sailings range from large, resort-style vessels to smaller, more intimate ships — here is what you need to know about each one.
Launched in 2022, Arvia is P&O’s newest ship and the largest ever built for the British market. The SkyDome — 970 m² of glass over a retractable performance stage and swimming pool — is a venue found nowhere else at sea. With more than 30 dining and bar venues including Sindhu, The Epicurean, The Glass House and the Keel & Cow gastropub, there is always somewhere new to eat. View Arvia’s cabins and deck plans.
Named by Queen Elizabeth II in 2015, Britannia sails year-round from Southampton and is arguably the most quintessentially British ship afloat. Menus across 13 restaurants and cafés carry the names of Marco Pierre White, Atul Kochhar and James Martin. For evenings, the Headliners Theatre features LED immersive technology, while the Limelight Club offers cabaret. Check Britannia’s cabins and deck plans if you want to pick the right grade before you call.
P&O’s flagship Iona launched in 2020 and is the largest ship sailing year-round from Southampton, accommodating up to 5,200 guests. It shares the SkyDome with Arvia — the same 970 m² retractable glass dome above a swimming pool — and offers 18 venues including Anderson’s gin bar, Sindhu, The Epicurean and The Chef’s Table. Browse Iona’s cabins and deck plans.
With capacity for just 1,400 guests, Ambience offers a noticeably more relaxed atmosphere than the larger P&O ships. All cabins are spacious and well equipped, and the Alfresco Grill gives you outdoor dining with sea views. It is a good fit if you prefer a quieter, less resort-like experience at sea. See Ambience’s cabins and deck plans for the full grade breakdown.
Cabin choice makes a real difference on a northern lights cruise — particularly if you want the option of stepping outside quickly when the aurora appears. Here is what is available across the main ships.
Full details, including deck-by-deck layouts, are on the Arvia cabins and deck plans page.
See the full breakdown on the Britannia cabins and deck plans page.
Deck plans and the full grade list are on the Ambience cabins and deck plans page.
The aurora borealis is visible in the high-latitude skies of Norway during the darker months of the year. Sailings depart from October onwards, covering the period when nights are long enough for aurora sightings to be possible. A 7-night sailing gives you several nights at sea in Norwegian waters, increasing your chances of seeing the lights. If you want to browse sailings by year, see northern lights cruises in 2026 and northern lights cruises in 2027.
Some sailings are available at reduced prices, with reductions of up to 28% off the price previously listed for that cabin grade on that sailing — though that maximum applies to a single departure. Most reduced sailings are discounted by around 10%. If you are flexible on dates, it is worth speaking to our team, who can identify which sailings currently offer the strongest saving. You can also browse cheap cruises under £599 pp* and last-minute P&O cruise deals for further value options.
Cruise1st is one of the UK’s leading cruise specialists, which means you get expert advice from people who know these itineraries and ships, not a general travel agent reading from a screen. Our team can help you choose the cabin grade and fare inclusions that suit your circumstances — whether that is the lowest-priced inside cabin or a suite with a private balcony for aurora watching.
For the small number of sailings that depart from abroad, a Cruise1st Package lets us put flights, hotels either side, transfers and insurance together as one booking, so nothing is left for you to arrange separately. For UK departures, we can add train travel, a hotel the night before you sail, or transfers to the port — all on one booking. We are also rated 4.5/5 on Trustpilot from over 7,000 reviews, and all bookings are protected by ABTA and ATOL.
If you are departing from Southampton, you may also find it useful to browse 2027 cruises from Southampton, P&O 2027 sailings from Southampton, or cheap cruises from Southampton to see what else is available from your nearest port.
Travelling from the north? Cruises from Newcastle upon Tyne lists sailings that start closer to home. Ambassador Cruise Line also departs from further north — see Ambassador cruises from Dundee if that suits you better.
If a 7-night northern lights voyage is more than you need, a cheap mini cruise or a 3-day mini cruise from Southampton can get you to sea for a long weekend. For coastal British sailings rather than Norway, England mini cruises offer a no-fly alternative closer to home. And if you want to compare the full picture of what is available from the UK, Norway cruises from the UK covers the wider range of Norwegian itineraries across all budgets.
For September departures before the main winter season begins, cruise deals in September 2026 are worth a look. Fred Olsen fans can check Fred Olsen last-minute deals for late availability on their sailings.
*Prices are per person based on 2 people sharing, and are subject to change. This price is not kept up to date and therefore does not reflect live pricing and availability. Prices and any discounts shown were checked on 14 October 2026.
Where a discount is shown, it is a reduction from the price previously listed for that cabin grade on that sailing, not a comparison between cabin grades or against a brochure rate. Discounts and prices shown are not kept up to date: the reduction available now may be smaller, or may have ended, and prices may have changed.
