Antigua means "ancient" in Spanish and was named by Christopher Columbus. In 1784 Admiral Horatio Nelson sailed to Antigua where he found warm, steady winds, a coastline of safe harbours, and a protective coral reef: the perfect environment to establish Great Britain's most important Caribbean base. Over 200 years later the same characteristics that attracted the Royal Navy have transformed Antigua in one of the Caribbean's premier tourist destinations.
