HISTORY OF THE SPICE ROUTE

Used as a trading route for various spices and other historical goods, the Spice Route, also known as the Silk Roads, was first used as early as 2000 BC as the primary route for transporting goods from East to West. Beginning from Asia on the west coast of Japan, through the Indonesian islands and around India, goods entered the Mediterranean region and followed across Europe into the West where they settled in their final destination. Along with spices such as cinnamon and nutmeg, other materials such as ivory and silk become popular items for trade. Throughout the journey of the Spice Route, ports became not only an attraction for the spice trade and trading other goods, but also a collective market of ideas and knowledge across countries and continents. Experience this iconic passage and cruise across the Spice Route to see the history for yourself!
